UDISA Urban Seminar Series: 2009
PAST EVENTS: SEMINAR 4 – November 2009 – Urban Design and Sustainability – title to be confirmed SEMINAR 3 – 15 October 2009 – THE ROLE OF URBAN DESIGN IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SUSTAINABILITY OBJECTIVES IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT readmore SEMINAR 2 – July 2009 |
- Dr Mark Napier – Urban Land Market Consultants, government housing policy contributor
- Mr Jac Snyman – Architect & Urban Design Practitioner – Expert Social Housing Projects
- Ms Cathy Stone – Director Planning, City of Cape Town
- Prof Julian Cooke – Emeritus Prof UCT, Housing Expert
- Mr Jens Kuhn – Directorate Housing, City of Cape Town
There were some interesting and heart felt discussions on the role of urban design in the public housing sector, and it became evident that there is a huge role for the urban design profession to play in this field. The presentation given by the panelists have been posted for your interest. The Executive Committee of Western Cape hopes that the membership takes this opportunity to become more involved in the next seminars that are lined up. Although the past seminars have been very well attended, participation from Udisa members has been disappointing. For those that have not yet attended any of the previous seminars, the next seminars in the series will take the form of short focused presentations by a panel of experts (not necessarily urban designers). This will then be followed by a panel discussion amongst the experts which members of the audience will be invited to participate in. The seminar will be recorded and written up with the aim of publishing an annual seminar document. Drinks and snacks will be available after the presentation and formal discussions.
The steering committee of UDISA has been engaging with a number of role players with regard to setting up a Precinct Sustainability Assessment Tool. There are a number of international examples of such tools, developed to assist both designers in the conceptualization of sustainable settlements, as well as assisting authorities in assessing applications for large scale developments. We would like to investigate the value, the “what” and the “how to” of setting up such a tool, adjusted for South African conditions.
